Floating Terror

I constructed, detailed, and painted this spaceship set for sci-fi short films. It is made primarily from old plastic packaging and found parts.

My first CNC project! I designed this spaceship window/porthole in Fusion 360 and used a CNC machine to cut it out of MDF. I then filled/sanded it and finished it to look like metal.

The first spacesuit I made, very low budget. The suit itself was a cheap painters suit and the gloves are spray painted winter gloves.

The helmet was a little more complex. The helmet itself was a bike helmet turned backwards. The visor was cut from a transparent dog recovery cone. The neck guard was made from a foam mat (the same one that the egg is made out of) and I used white duct tape to blend the seems. I used various kids toys and some old router antennas to add detail.

The backpack was made from a plastic bin, spray paint lids, and a Clorox wipes container.

As featured in the spaceship set gallery, this spacesuit was quite the jump from the first one. The suit itself was made from an insulated cotton coverall. It was originally a shade of brown/tan and had to be thoroughly bleached numerous times to achieve the final off-white color.

The goal was for this spacesuit to have more of a retro look, so the helmet was made out of a large acrylic lamp dome with an old microphone mouth piece and LED strips lining the inside.

The vest was a life jacket spray painted white with some extra details glued on, the pack was made from an ice cube bin and Clorox wipe containers, and the gloves were just winter gloves also sprayed white.

This spacesuit, made for my film The Cosmonaut by my friend Megan Rickmers, is based on vintage soviet spacesuits.

The suit itself is an orange jumpsuit with a few modifications and patches added. The helmet is a heavily modified Halloween costume helmet, Megan gave it a new visor, added mechanical detail, and gave the whole thing a paintjob to more closely match the real life soviet suits!

This alien egg puppet was built for a homage to the 1979 film. It was constructed out of various foam mats and painted to look organic. The inside webbing was made from cotton coated in liquid latex. The four petals were able to open and ungulate via wire pulled through the bottom. An air bladder on the inside was used to create the illusion of breathing/throbbing.

I made this sloth mascot costume for a music video, the head was constructed out of upholstery foam and the skin was sewn together by hand with various faux furs and felts.

I made this raptor skeleton/fossil for one of my sculpture classes. Due to time limitations the detail is fairly low and I had to leave it white, but I was very pleased with the result. I later made a single raptor claw to a much higher level of fidelity and realistically aged it, I hope to return to this project and make an entire skeleton up to that standard.

I made this ceramic ray gun in several pieces on the pottery wheel before assembling them together and glazing with a metallic black finish.

Ceramics is one of my favorite hobbies and I love making various forms on the pottery wheel. Here are a few highlights!

A quick and dirty build, this small time-machine was a reference to the Flux Capacitor from the Back to the Future movies. I made a small box out of styrene with slits cut through it to mimic the pattern of the Flux capacitor. A small compartment in the back housed a 7” Quasar, allowing light to shine through. Added a few plastic bits and wires and it was done! Not an accurate replica by any means, but being made on a budget in a short amount of time I was very pleased!

I constructed this large ray gun out of dollar store toys and various other knick-knacks. I drilled holes through the center of each part and threaded them onto a piece of all thread rod, using nuts to hold everything in place. Constructing it this way allowed me to easily change the order of parts along the length of the gun so I could experiment until I found an arrangement I liked. Once the construction was finished I painted and aged it to look like metal.
